As you may know, Public Law 109 requires the evaluation of reading skills for students who are in grade three. This law came into effect in the spring of 2012. This legislation was created to ensure that all students can read proficiently before moving on to grade four. Indiana legislation has passed a law requiring that children who are not reading at third grade level be retained in third grade. The ability to read at grade level will be determined by the IREAD standards-based test.
IREAD stands for Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination. This test is based on the Indiana Academic Standards and is a summative assessment that measures foundational reading skills.
The IREAD test will be administered the week of March 3rd - March 14th, 2025. This test is composed of three sessions. Please make sure your child is keeping up with homework, reading at home, and having good attendance.
Through the development of the 90 minute reading block, we are identifying those students who are struggling and remediating their difficulties. Our teachers are using data to drive our instruction and remediation, so we can ensure we are meeting the students' needs.
If you have any questions about this test, please feel free to talk with your child's teacher and/or the administration. We would be happy to explain it in further detail. Again, thank you for your involvement in the education of your student.
